Biometric device used in Medical entrance exam to curb exam impersonators

A new device has been used for IPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research) entrance exams being held countrywide on Sunday.

AuthenTrac captures fingerprints and photographs of candiadates.AuthenTrac will capture fingerprints and photographs of each of the 15,000 candidates.matching it with previously-stored candidate data from the institution. The data will be re-checked at the time of counselling and seat allotment.

The current process to nail impersonation is weak because it relies on easily forge-able signatures and photographs which can be smudgy and grainy.

Change in IIM eligibility criteria students troubled

New IIMs are screening aspirants calling students for GD-PI on the basis of their bachelor degree marks.

CAT prospectus clearly speaks about 50% marks in the bachelor’s degree as the eligibility, the new 4 IIMs in Shillong, Rohtak, Trichy, Raipur are screening students based on 65% score in the bachelor’s degree as their minimum eligibility criteria

The other older IIMs — Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode —are screening students for the GD and PI based on a weightage they are assigning to CAT scores, class X, XII and degree marks.

Many students have been affected by this last minute change.

Professors are claiming atleast older IIMs are following right procedure.

While the B-schools had said they would consider parameters other than CAT scores, the often decisive weightages given to these criteria were only disclosed after the CAT 2010 results were released last month.

INDIA's Best MBA college

The Financial Times has just released its new global MBA rankings for 2011.According to the Global MBA Rankings 2011, the Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) delivered by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) was placed 11th. This is the first time IIM-A has been included in the ranking.Next indian college in this list is ISB which is at 13 th position.

For IIM-A, an important component of being eligible for this ranking is that three batches of students should have passed out of a B-school to qualify for this particular ranking.

Shailesh Gandhi, professor and chairperson of the PGPX programme of IIM-A, said: “This ranking proves we are moving into the international league. ISB always had the advantage of a substantial international faculty component, which IIM-A has not had. Another important feature for the ranking is the substantial work experience of the students and this speaks highly of our batch profile. Most of the students of this batch are about 32-33 years and have an average work experience of 11 years. This comparative advantage that was garnered by the institute will simply add on the strength of its students work profile before they joined the PGPX programme.”

In September 2010, IIM-A had been ranked eighth for its two-year postgraduate programme in management (PGP) in the Financial Times Masters in Management 2010 ranking from among 71 programmes.

XLRI Jamshedpur not invited toppers (Process glitch)

This year due to some glitch in selection process students who have scored to be in the top 1 percentile of the entrance test and despite having cleared the cutoffs, the Xavier’s Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) School of Business and Human Resources, Jamshedpur, which owns the XAT, does not consider them fit enough for an admissions interview to its post-graduate Business Management (BM) or Human Resources Management (HRM) programs. XLRI declared its interview shortlist on January 26, 2011, a day after declaring the XAT results.

According to the XLRI website, the criteria it has used to shortlist candidates for the BM and HRM programs are,

For Human Resource Management Programme around 650 applicants having more than 85 percentile in VA, 70 percentile in QA, 75 percentile in AR, and overall 91 percentile have been shortlisted for Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

For Business Management Programme around 550 applicants having more than 70 percentile in VA, 90 percentile in QA, 80 percentile in AR, and overall 92 percentile have been shortlisted for Personal Interview.

However on Friday, January 28, the affected candidates received some respite. There was a clarification put up on the XLRI website which said,

Candidates having percentile scores higher than respective cut off scores for BM/HRM (as given in, AND have submitted their application for these programme(s) to XLRI within deadline, AND have not been shortlisted, are requested to send an email to or Fax to 0657 398/665 3200.

An XLRI aspirant from Gandhinagar has also reportedly received a reply which says that the issue will be resolved by the second week of February 2011.
