Marks in Physics in IIT-JEE 2012 will be equal to marks in Physics section of Paper 1 plus marks in Physics section of Paper 2. Similar procedure will be followed for Chemistry and Mathematics. The sum of the marks obtained in the individual subjects in IIT-JEE 2012 will be the aggregate marks for the candidate.

In order to qualify a candidate needs to score at least 10 per cent marks in each of the three subjects and a minimum of 35 per cent to get a rank.

Computer science marks for enggineering eligibility

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has came under pressure from several states to change eligibility criteria for engineering courses: it has agreed to consider computer science and electronics as qualifying subjects along with the existing ones.

The apex regulator, however, has turned down the request to reduce eligibility criteria for general category students from the revised 50% marks (45% in case of SC/ST candidates) in qualifying subjects for admission to engineering courses. AICTE had enhanced eligibility criteria by 5% for general category students from this year.

Higher education minister V S Acharya may meet HRD minister Kapil Sibal in New Delhi on Tuesday to push for reduction in eligibility criteria for 2011-12.

IITians wrote essays

Students from the Indian Institute of Techn-ology-Bombay (IIT-B) fell prey to what could be termed as one of the most successful mass pranks played on April Fool’s Day, this year.  At midnight on March 31, the students received an e-mail stating that the institute had 50 free tickets for the ICC World Cup final match to be played at Wankhede Stadium on April 2. The mail solicited applications asking students to write a 250-word essay on why they deserved the prized tickets.

In less than an hour, 675 of the country’s brightest youngsters sent in detailed requests. “I have secured All India Rank 30 in IIT-JEE and state rank 1 in MP-PET. My Cumulative Point Index is 9.36,” said an applicant’s essay.

The techies weren’t shy to boast. “I have designed three add-ons for the Mozilla Firefox, which has had over 60,000 downloads so far,” said an essay.

The prank, executed by a self-appointed anonymous ‘General Secretary Aprilfool Affairs’, promises more fun. A list of fools has been posted on a blog with excerpts from their essays.

The prank seemed so genuine that students queued up outside the administrator’s office for tickets.

The authorities had to send out an email telling students that it was a prank. “The prankster covered his tracks well. We could not trace the origin of the mail, but it was super fun,” said a student.

IIT JEE will be online in 3 years

The IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) which is comprised of all JEE chairmen, has decided to make the entrance test for admission to the IITs computer based instead of the usual paper-pencil test format. Will JAB will be outsourcing the online testing procedure, a faculty member said that the IITs had the technical knowledge for conducting the online test but might look for a partner if the number of students appearing for the examination was too large.A officer said If we are to make JEE a computer based online test, we would require a huge question bank that has questions of a constant difficulty level,” he stated. He further added that the fact that the old question papers had been destroyed had slowed down the process to make JEE an online test.
